links a la mode

Edited by: Florrie Clarke of Intrinsically Florrie

I’ve been overwhelmed by the quality of the submissions and I hope you’ll enjoy reading these as much as I have. This week the issue of workwear is tackled whether as a fashion blogger you’re heading to Fashion Week or you’re not sure how to translate your everyday style to the office. The latter is a dilemma I’m often confronted with when dressing for work. Through the links I have also gleefully discovered some wonderful designers to dreamily sigh over the work of; these garments would most definitely fit into my wardrobe perfectly, be it in the smart section or the purely frivolous one.

The Four Mile Fire

“Watchers 3/5″ by Drew Levin

I don’t know if you have had the opportunity to visit Colorado, but let me just tell you that it is beautiful. I was lucky enough to have visited it on multiple occasions, and on each visit was awed by it’s silent, dignified beauty; I did not understand what “purple mountains majesty” meant until I visited Colorado.

When I heard there were fires just outside of Boulder, a small part of my heart keened. It pains me to think of all that beauty falling to so much flame and ash. My heart goes out to all the residents of the area, both for the loss of their property, but more so for the loss of their home; the trees, the wilderness, all the beautiful things they have come to know and love.

There’s very little that can make such a situation like this at all palatable, but it seems fitting that some beauty be able to be drawn from the wanton destruction: photographer and Colorado resident Drew Levin has put together a stunning photo collection of the blaze, that makes the fire seem like a landscape of some beautiful, lonely planet.

Lovely Sir Ian: A Photo Collection

Recently I came across a photo of an extremely young (and extremely handsome) Sir Ian McKellan, of Lord of the Rings fame. I was so smitten with this angelic, dapper depiction of one of my favorite actors, that I took it upon myself to do some further exploration for images of Sir Ian in his youth. The results, I am happy to report, are just as lovely.

links a la mode

Edited by: Thom of The Sunday Best

For the past week I’ve been listening to Cee-Lo Green’s fantastic send-off, F@#* You, and little else. At the same time I’ve been reading a lot of the hand-wringing in the press about bloggers and whatever are we going to do about them, along with our responses both here and on our blogs. And the two have combined in my head to form a single determination – bloggers need more swagger. I don’t mean anger, of the you-don’t-respect-us variety, or apologetics, of the we-are-as-legitimate-as-other-media variety. I mean swagger, the kind of swagger that comes from doing something well and knowing you’re good at it. So whatever other themes might knit together this week’s links, they all share that important characteristic – swagger. Step up to the plate, knock it out of the park.

Lady Gaga, Vogue Japan

1. Lord Gaga: Like we needed another reason to adore this woman – Gaga goes butch for a beautiful collection of Japanese Vogue covers.

2. The Green Team: Time magazine has put together a comprehensive list of the top 100 design companies and individuals making sustainability the order of the day. In other words, 100 people deserving savage hi-fives.

3. Ridiculous Luxury Jets: Martin Parr has carved out a very peculiar niche for himself in the world of photography, photographing the interior of private jets owned by some of the richest individuals in the world. The resulting body of work looks like something straight out of Barbarella.
