Wardrobery 02.11.10: New York Fashion Week

It’s Fashion Week! That means I get to run around like a chicken without a head, loving every minute of it. This has been a particularly fun Fashion Week, due in large part to all of the events being hosted by Independent Fashion Bloggers.

IFB Presents “Links à la Mode”: The Anti-Fashion Week

links a la mode
Edited by Dramatis Personae

That isn’t to say that I’m against Fashion Week… but more that this week’s Links á la Mode just really isn’t focused on it. With amazing interviews from kaKofoniesOfsi(gh)lens, Fashion in My Eyes, and Eternal Masquerade to great features on vintage clothing from Retro Chick and Unfunded, there’s as much fabulousness on off the catwalk as on.

Maybe it’s bitterness that I’ll be missing out on NYFW for the 3rd season in a row or maybe it’s my gentle heart preventing you all from Fashion Week burnout too soon…which it is, I’ll never tell.

    Inspiration Machine 76 “Snowbound”

Clockwise from top left: elsvo (back to 365), *Zara, mydearDelilah, gia_365days

    1. Make a choir of snow angels.

    2. Conduct an epic snowball fight.

    3. Fill several squirt guns with water mixed with food coloring, and proceed to “paint” on the snow in a kaleidoscope of colors.

    4. Go on a moonlit walk in a field of virgin snow. (Hint in “virgin snow” finding: look for golf courses and graveyards).

    5. Scatter bird seed atop the white stuff for a kind treat for our feathered friends. Also, nothing is more lovely to watch than little birds atop snow.

    6. Write inspirational words in snow banks you pass by.

    7. Shovel your neighbor’s walk along with your own. The good karma will come back to you.

    8. Go on a hunt for the perfect sledding hill.

    9. Wash your face with new fallen snow for a refreshing pick-me-up.

    10. Imagine how wonderful summer will be after a winter as white as this one.

One of my favorite new fun winter time accessories is this up-cycled vintage fur stole. I purchased this little beaut from 001TrickPony.

Tank: Target; Sweater: Thrifted; Pants: Victoria’s Secret; Boots: Zara; Stole: Etsy; Necklace: Etsy

It’s super-soft, and incredibly warm. TrickPony did a great job refurbishing. adding a useful toggle button, and covering the interior with a lovely paisley fabric.

    What’s your favorite wintertime accessory?

    Edited by Debutante Clothing

I’m always complaining about going out to fashion events by myself – I just don’t have many friends that are into fashion. While some people think fashion is frivolous and contributes nothing to the world, others are curating museum exhibits featuring 20th century clothing. This week’s links made me think about the love/hate camps in fashion. Starting with Grit and Glamour’s post on bloggers getting backlash from fashion insiders, Houndstooth + Tortoiseshell’s refreshingly funny admission of Tavi envy, or Fab Lab’s hate of people who hate. But there is some love in sight – British Style Bloggers reminds us to look in the mirror and love ourselves. Enjoy!

“Hello Kitty Chainsaw” via Hello Kitty Hell

    1. Hello Kitty Hell: Naysayers be damned: this thing is awesome. If I needed to be killed by an insane axe murderer, this would be my letter of choice, and it would be so KAWAI!! Also, this would ideally held by this guy.

    2. A Sculpture That Perpetually Sells Itself On eBay: Artist Caleb Larsen has created an art sculpture which every ten minutes pings a server on the internet via an ethernet connection to check if it is for sale on the eBay. If its auction has ended or it has sold, it automatically creates a new auction of itself. A compelling piece of work concerning art, the internet, and marketability.

    3. Heinz Ketchup Packet Redesigned: I want to know why this took so damn long!? Why have I had to suffer through nearly thirty years of squeezing ridiculously small ketchup packets. Bitterness aside, we can all take relief that our days of suffering over 12 sticky, nasty packets to eat a container of french fries are OVER. HALLELUJAH.

    4. Evelyn Evelyn: One of my favorite musical artists working today is Amanda Palmer. Her unique sound, her exhibitionism, and her artistic vision never cease to surprise and delight me. Her newest collaboration with Jason Webley, the “promoting” of two conjoined twin performers, features: “Weird Al” Yankovic, Andrew W.K., Tegan and Sara, My Chemical Romance’s Gerard Way, Neil Gaiman, and Frances Bean Cobain. Yeah, that one. It will be difficult for this NOT to be awesome.

    5. CSS Rolls A Coke Can: Ok, I am not sure if this is going to resonate to anyone who isn’t a code-monkey/junkie, but it’s so cool, I can’t help mentioning it. Click the link – see that Coke can? See how it rolls? That’s done with code. No flash, no movie. Straight code. And it’s fracking beautiful.

    6. 15 Cute Animals That Will Cause You Horrible Harm: They may look cute and cuddly, but BEWARE! They will kill you. Though I have to point out that I feel the rats are being given a bad hand here – it’s not their fault Bubonic fleas love them. Stop hating, civilization.

    7. 5 Easy Ways to Make Your Screenshots Look Great: As designers, we are inundated with screenshots we have to make look awesome. It gets a mite tiresome. Digital Telepathy gives some tips on bringing the fun back into that run-of-the-mill screenshot.

Finally, I am PROUD to present. Hand Puppet Karate.

Keep it real. Watch out for that blizzard.

    3. If you could have another sister or brother, which would you choose, and why? What would their name be?

    4. Take three pieces of clothing you hate, and merge them into a new piece you LOVE.

    5. Write an essay about your favorite childhood object.

    6. Run like an antelope.

    7. Share your creativity generously.

    8. What’s your favorite smell? Describe it in detail, and how it makes you feel.

Tank: Victoria’s Secret; Top: Mango; Pants: Thrifted; Shoes: eBay; Scarf: Conway; Belt: Vintage shop in Harijuku

I love this belt so much – when I wear it, I feel like I am a present. I nabbed it in this amazing little vintage shop in Harijuku Japan when I visited my sister there a couple of years back. We did an unbelievable amount of shopping on that trip, but I am rather grateful for it. There’s nothing like shopping in a foreign country, because it really allows you to gather some really unique pieces for your fashion collection. Plus, every time I wear them, I am transported back to the memories of that trip, and what a wonderful time we had.
