links a la mode
Edited by Retro Chick

It’s been a long time since pay day and this weeks Links à la Mode brings a touch of much needed frivolity as we crawl into the second month of a new decade. Idiosyncratic Style takes Scooby Doo’s Velma as her style inspiration, Dirty Hems is inspired by dolls houses and Ode to Awe shows off her leopard print nails. Want something for nothing? A few Goody Gumdrops has an Aspinall of London bag to giveaway and Retro Chick (that’s me!) has 2 Valentine goodie bags to giveaway worth over £100 each. We’ve also got some great designer interviews and some practical advice.

On a more sober note there’s some timely tips from Sway, Sway, Sway! on how you can continue to donate to Haiti without getting scammed, Shoe Daydreams discusses Tanya Golds “Why I hate Fashion” article and Ventures of Jenn shares her opinions on the body image debate.

Bring on February!

“Architecture of IRAN during Islamic times”

    1. “Architecture of IRAN during Islamic times” by pesaretabrizi: This gorgeous collection of Iranian architecture is fantastic, mystical and inspiring.

    2. Reknit: Your favorite knit sweater dying a slow, unraveling death? Never fear! ReKnit will transform your favorite old sweater into a shiny, new scarf for you to enjoy. Welcome to upcycle heaven.

    3. Pennyshooter Prototype: I have seen the future, and in that future I can wing you with a penny with my business card. Better start ducking, bitches.

    4. Why Humans Were Born To Run Barefoot: This fascinating article and radio clip explains how scientists are discovering how running barefoot affects human’s stride, and why it appears to actually be significantly better for us to run in this fashion.

    5. Mac Vs. PC: The Complete Campaign: AdFreak has collected the entire collection of what may be considered the best ad campaign of the decade. If only John Hodgman wasn’t so loveable

    6. “If Movie Posters Told The Truth”: Though I personally feel these “photo-editing” contests can get a little out of hand, a majority of these altered movie posters are remarkably well done, and exceptionally amusing.

    7. Ain’t: I came across the Wikipedia page for this colloquialism the other day. It’s a fascinating grammatical read of a practically made up slang word.

Finally, if you aren’t familiar with Fever Ray, the solo side project of The Knives front woman Karin Dreijer Andersson, you really, really, need to acquaint yourself, because it was one of the best albums that came out last year, in my humble opinion. If that isn’t a good enough reason, then I turn your attention to this award acceptance speech she recently gave in Sweden while accepting the award for best dance record. Known for never revealing her face, she is swiftly giving Lady Gaga a run for her money in the performance art department. And I LOVE it…

    links a la mode
    Edited by Dramatis Personae

Fashion’s getting heavier– and I’m not just talking about the rise of supermodels like Crystal Renn. This week we’ve got meaty posts covering ethical topics like the sustainability of bamboo at Awakened Aesthetic while Bonne-Vie covers the the implications of buying items made in China. We’ve got not 1–not 2, but 3 AMAZING Interviews this week at Alice in Stilettos, kaKofonie Of si(gh)lenS, and White Rabbit. Even Gala Darling’s post on her 2010 Style Direction could serve as a paperweight, it’s so chock full of inspiring images, details, and notations.

As usual, there’s a fabulous collection of links in the forums for your continued reading pleasure!

“Soviet Women Dreaming of Future” by Alina Rudya

    1. Alina Rudya: Feature Shoot spotlights this Ukrainian-based photographer whose work stretches the gap between the old world and the new.

    2. You Dropped Food on the Floor – Do You Eat It?: Good Eats helps us deliberate this vexing question with an informative and hilarious flow chart. Hint: you usually eat it.

    3. 24 Kick Ass Portfolio Designs: Varying to supremely simple to tricked out to the max, Fuel Your Creativity offers some stellar examples of online portfolios done well.

    4. Clients From Hell: A blog that is a collection of anonymously contributed client horror stories from designers. Find out what its like to be a designer, or commiserate your existence if you happen to be one.

    5. Conan O’Brien Keeps It Real: I along with a lot of other people I know feel like NBC really picked the lame horse on this one. However, I have been completely impressed with the sensitivity with which Conan and his team have successfully spun this disaster. Reading formal statement he released earlier this week shows you just how in tune he is to the sympathies and thoughts of his audience.

    6. 10 Web Design Rules That You Can Break: With this list of web design taboos used effectively and fantastically, Web Design Depot proves that to a good designer, the only rule is there are no rules.

    7. MyKarmaSutraBuddy: This is the reason they invented the internet, folks: kama sutra positions filmed for your perusal by several different couples with alternate body types, including very large and extremely little people. Obviously, this may be not safe for work. There’s no nudity, but your going to see some ridiculously funny sex positions.

Finally, this brilliant palindrome ad will give you chills. Simply brilliant…

    1. Write a new daily affirmation each morning – a bit of inspiration for you to hold on to throughout your day.

    2. Make a gift basket based around a friend’s favorite movie – for instance, a “Pulp Fiction” basket could include dark sunglasses, sponges, a plastic baggie of sugar, and of course, cheese.

    3. Try to perform a small, insignificant act with as much concentration and grace as you can muster; making a cup of tea, per se, or walking down a hallway.

    4. Tidy your mind like you tidy your home. Take a few minutes each day to discover thoughts, concerns and fears. Find an effective way to deal with each as they surface: everything has its place.

    5. Make it your mission never to do anything half-assed.

    6. Keep a “Gift Book”: dedicate each page to a close friend or family member, and down write any great gift ideas for them as they strike you. You’ll never be at a loss for a gift again.

    7. Cover your entire arm in fake tattoos. Don a subtle, sleeveless dress, and let it shine as your sole accessory.

    8. Commit your mouth to only being a vessel of good energy: banish insults, and negative comments from your repertoire.

    9. Seek joy within yourself, not from outside sources.

    10. Never forget others in need: text “90999″ and donate $10 to the American Red Cross. (Yes, this one’s legit).

    Citizens of Humanity

Love the new, tie-dye-esque washes of this collection by Citizens of Humanity. The antique colors and romantic, quirky embellishments have a sensibility mixed with a sense of fun. The mottled dyes gives the jeans an extremely sensual, tactile appearance. Shabby-chic bohemian all the way
